Reading and Writing
In reading, we follow a sequence which allows children to explore practice and apply key skills such as retrival, inference, language, sequecing and prediction.
We use talk for writing in our writing sequence which allows us to practice spoken language, imitation, and internalisation of text structures. We use colourful semantics to begin to learn sentence construction by visually linking question words to sentence parts such as assigning orange to "who?" and yellow to "what doing".
Step One - Learn the frequently used words for the week
Step Two - Write a dictated sentence provided by the teacher
Step Three - Innovate the sentence
Step Four - Independently write a sentence
Step Five - Use 'talk for writing' to learn and internalise a piece of text using actions to support sequencing a longer piece of writing.

Our science topic in Autumn term is 'my body' We will be looking at the parts of the body we can see, labelling them and knowing what they do for us. This includes linking the correct part of the body to the correct sense. We will be playing lots of games using our senses to find out just how important they are and discuss which one we feel is the most important. We will also look at how to keep our mind and body healthy through what we eat, exercise and sleep. |
Our history topic is 'buildings in Peterlee'.
We will be looking at the mining village of Peterlee and how it changed and adapted to become the town that it is today. We will investigate what houses used to look like, what the streets and neighboring villages may have looked like and how they have changed over time. We will be beginning to use a timeline to plot events. |
Our geography topic is Peterlee.
We will be able to locate Peterlee on a map and know the landforms within it including the woodland / forests and the coastline. We will be able to name the water bodies around Peterlee including the Castle Eden Burn / stream and the North Sea. |

We begin Year One with two very important topics in our PSHE lesson; Safety First, VIPS.
It is essential that we know how to keep ourselves and those around us safe as well as knowing who are trusted adults are and how they can be a duty bearer for our right to be safe. |
