Year 1 - Mrs Sloanes 2025 - 2026
Mrs Sloanes

As we transition into Year One we will be extending our learning through play. In our classroom we have lots of areas of provision linked to our curriculum and the interests of the children.
Reading and Writing
We use Talk Through Stories to explore story sequencing, inference and language practically through role play, discussion and games.
Our writing sequence follows a five step sequence.
Step One - Learn the frequently used words for the week
Step Two - Write a dictated sentence provided by the teacher
Step Three - Innovate the sentence
Step Four - Independently write a sentence
Step Five - Use 'talk for writing' to learn and internalise a piece of text using actions to support sequencing a longer piece of writing.

Maths
We follow Maths No problem which follows a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach allowing the children to fully embed new learning through discussion and practical learning before applying their skills to a written format.
In autumn term we have explored numbers within 10. This included their value, sequencing, number bonds and addition/ subtraction.
In spring term this progresses to understanding numbers within 20 and using our prior knowledge to support addition and subtraction and forming fact families and moving on to numbers within 40! We are always up for a challenge in Y1S and use our maths resources to support our new knowledge. We also have available resources and challenge activities in our continuous provision for children to reguarly use and apply their skills in their play to enhance their learning.
